Attitudes Toward Employment—Work Opinion Questionnaire Thornberry
1. I am not quite ready to handle a part-time job.
2. I have enough skills to do a job well.
3. I know I can succeed at work.
4. I would take almost any kind of job to get money.
5. I admire people who get by without working.
6. The only good job is one that pays a lot of money.
7. Working hard at a job will pay off in the end.
8. Most jobs are dull and boring.

These items measure self-confidence and motivation for work. Youth are asked to check the response that best corresponds with their beliefs. This might be a good instrument for mentoring programs that feature career exploration or a vocational focus.

Middle and high school age youth. Has been used in the field on African-American males aged 12-16.

Pencil and paper self-report. Rated on a scale of “Stongly agree” to “Strongly disagree.”
Point values for items 2‚ 3 and 7 are assigned as follows:
Strongly agree = 4
Agree = 3
Disagree = 2
Strongly disagree = 1
Items 1‚ 4‚ 5‚ 6 and 8 should be reverse coded. Point values are summed for each respondent and divided by the number of items. The intended range of scores is 1-4‚ with a higher score indicating a more positive attitude toward employment.
